11 DAYS BIRDWATCHING TOUR IN KENYA /

    Detail Itinerary

Day 1.
Evening arrival at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta internal airport and transfer to the city hotel.
Overnight at Sarova Panafric hotel. BB

 
Day 2 – Nairobi-Naivasha.
After breakfast we depart for Naivasha arriving in time for lunch. We will have a stop overs along the way as you please including Limuru ponds. The pond may elicit Intermediate Egret, Maccoa Duck, White-faced Tree Duck, Fulvous Duck, Black Crake and Whiskered Tern among others. Arrives in time for lunch at the lodge. Afternoon birding in the tall acacia woodland on the beautiful hotel grounds. Expected on the surroundings include Gabar Goshawk, Diederic and Black Cuckoos, Verreaux’s Eagle-owl, White-fronted Bee-eater, Lesser and Wahlberg’s Honeyguide, Black-lored Babbler, Amethyst Sunbird, Grey-headed Bush-shrike, Spectacled Weaver, Pink-backed Pelican, Goliath and Purple Herons, Southern Pochard, African Marsh-harrier, Purple Swamphen, Lesser Moorhen, Three-banded Plover and Lesser Swamp-warbler.

You will have an hour boat ride in Lake Naivasha as you study some birds around the lake including the hunting fish eagles. Lake Naivasha is one of the unique rivers in Kenya being a fresh water without an outlet after the Only river Ol njorowa found itself higher than the source and becomes a gorge.

Day 3 – Naivasha-Elementaita-Nakuru.
After breakfast depart Naivasha with picnic lunch for adjacent Lake Elementaita region. Other species found here include Black-necked Grebe , greater flamingo, lesser flamingo, African Spoonbill, great white pelican, jackson’s widowbird among others. Proceed to menengai Crater where you will check in at the Camp. Spend the rest of the day walking around the camp viewing some birds present in this area. Dinner and overnight at Maili Saba Camp. Day 4 – Lake Nakuru National Park.
Breakfast at 6 am. Depart for Lake Nakuru National Park. Lake Nakuru has been described as the pink lake due to the millions population of Lesser Flamingo making the lake appear pink from far but recently the color has changed due to flooding which has send the Flamingos to Lake Bogoria. Greater Flamingos, White-winged Black Tern, Hildebrandt’s Francolin, Steppe Eagle, Grey-crowned Crane, Little Rock Thrush, Cliff Chat, Cinnamon-breasted Rock Bunting. Apart from the birds, you will see Zebras, Warthogs, Grant and Thomson’s Gazelles, Buffalos, White Rhino, Rothschild Giraffe. Though rare, Lions and Leopards can be seen on a good day. Visit the famous baboon cliff which is a picnic spot for relaxation as you take your packed lunch. The baboons here are aggressive and they can grab your lunch at any time!

Return to the camp around 1800hrs for Dinner and overnight at Maili Saba Camp. LDBB

 
Day 5 – Nakuru- Lake Bogoria.
Morning breakfast and depart for Lake Bogoria game reserve with picnic lunch. Have stop over along the way to view birds. Check in at the lodge and enjoy a nature walk around viewing some bird species. Visit the lake which also host the reserve. The flamingoes and other bird species which escapes lake Nakuru are dominant species. Visit to the hot springs and geysers is a must to enjoy a healthy steam bath but caution should be taken when walking around here. Other bird species here include superb sterling, heron, weaver birds, hammer kop, marabou stock among others.

Day 6 – Lake Bogoria – Kakamega Forest via Lake Baringo.
Early morning breakfast and depart with picnic lunch boxes to Kakamega via Lake Baringo for a boat ride along the shores for chances to see various herons: Squacco, Green-backed and Purple Heron, Hammer kop, African Jacana as well as Hippos and Crocs. African Fish Eagle feeding will be interesting. Should time permits we shall take a shorter walk, birds here will include: Heuglin’s Courser, Slender-tailed Nightjar, Greyish Eagle-owl, White-faced Scops Owl, Verreaux’s Eagle-owl, Lichtenstein Sand Grouse, White-bellied Canary, Cliff Chat, Brown-tailed Rock Chat, Somali Golden-breasted Bunting, Emerald-spotted Wood-Dove, Common Kestrel, Giant Eagle-owl, Hemprich’s Hornbill, Jackson’s Hornbill, Little Bee-eater, White-throated Bee-eater, Madagascar Buffalo Weaver, Bristle-crowned Starling, Lanner Falcon, Pigmy Falcon, Gabar Goshawk, Shikra Falcon, Isabeline Wheatear, Pied Wheatear, Dark Chanting Goshhawk, Cardinal, Grey and Nubian Woodpeckers, Red-billed Oxpecker, Red and Yellow Barbet, D’arnauds Barbet, Rofous-crowned and Lilac-breasted Rollers. Depart for Kakamega Forest, birding on the way. Dinner and overnight stay at Rondo Retreat.
 
Day 7 – Kakamega Forest.
Birding after breakfast if weather permits and this day will leave you in awe!. Lunch break at Rondo and afterwards a short rest followed by birding till evening. Equatorial Akalat, African Broadbill, Chubb’s Cisticola, White-headed Saw-wing, Blue headed Bee-eater, Square-tailed Drongo, Common Wattle-eye, Luhder’s Bush-shrike, Bocage’s Bush-shrike, Stuhlman’s Starling and Double-toothed Barbet. Species of monkeys that can be spotted includes; black and white colobus monkey, blue monkey and red tail monkey.

Day 8 – Kakamega-Kisumu.
After breakfast, take the Rondo retreat nature trail. Some of the Species to be located here may include, Ludherers Bush Shrike, White-chinned Prinia, Spotted Flufftail and on a lucky day the Forest Cobra.
After lunch Depart for Lake Victoria region. Afternoon have a nature walk around the Hotel view some resident birds.Dinner overnight at Kiboko Bay Resort. LDBB
 
Day 9 – Kisumu-masai Mara.
At 8.00 am we will take a 3 hour boat ride from Hippo Point, The Papyrus swamps along the shoreline are home to several birds not easily found anywhere else, notably Papyrus Gonolek, Papyrus Yellow Warbler, Papyrus Canary, Carruther’s Cisticola, Swamp Flycatcher, Blue-headed Coucal, White-winged Swamp-Warbler, and Greater Swamp-Warbler. Later depart with picnic lunch boxes to Africa’s greatest Masai Mara with several stop overs along the way. Check in at the lodge upon arrival and have a short walks around the lodge. Day 10- Masai Mara national reserve.
Breakfast at the lodge and depart with picnic lunch boxes for a full day game drive. This day animal species will dominate the activities with view bird species spicing up the game drives. Birds that can be seen here includes; crebes, ostrich, hoopes, secretary birds, egrets and bitterns, sterling among others. You will also get a chance to spot the big five; lion, leopard, Rhino, Elephant and buffalo among other plain games. Dinner and overnight stay at JK Mara Camp. LDBB

 
Day 11- Mara-Nairobi/Departure

After your last safari breakfast, depart with packed lunch for Nairobi where you will be drop off at the Jomo Kenyatta International airport for your outbound flight back home.
